Loveland, Colo.-based Meyer Natural Angus has agreed to purchase Coleman Natural Foods' beef business, according to industry sources who spoke with people inside both companies. The acquisition, said to be in the works for the past several weeks, is expected to be officially announced as early as Friday. Industry sources said Meyer purchased the license to Coleman's beef brand and its customer lists, but no hard assets. Coleman's beef slaughter plant in Limon, Colo., and its fabrication facility in Denver are expected to close. Golden, Colo.-based Coleman's poultry and pork businesses will not be affected by the purchase, and business with its beef customers is expected to continue without interruption, the sources said. Coleman natural and organic products are available at conventional and specialty stores nationwide under various labels, including Coleman Natural, Coleman Organic, Rocky, Rocky Jr., Rosie Organic, Hans' All-Natural and Hans' Organic. Meyer is no stranger to acquisitions, having purchased Lexington, Ky.-based Laura's Lean Beef in December 2007. (See Meyer Natural Angus acquires Laura's Lean Beef on Meatingplace.com, Jan. 15, 2008.)
